Live in Concert

Developed & Artistic Director|Welly Yang

Book & Lyrics|Brian Yorkey, Matt Eddy

Music|Woody Pak

In 2003, The Taiwanese-American Broadway star Welly Yang, Tony Award-winning playwright Brian Yorkey and composer Woody Pak put Ang Lee's classical movie The Wedding Banquet on the stage.  This much-loved story opens the door to the world of musicals.

The Wedding Banquet is about family, ethics and love: two men, a woman, parents and children involved with deep loves.  The conflicts between different generations and cultures in the story have sparked dramatic changes.

Most importantly, The Wedding Banquet was incredibly poignant and had an important story to tell: reconciling our own dreams and passions against the weight of Chinese traditions. In the end, the protagonist WaiTung realizes that he will never become the man he wants to be until he is truthful to his parents and the world about who he is. Honesty prevails, and we discover that love is love -- across divided cultures, and across generations -- no matter where it exists, and where we find love, is also where we find family, no matter where it exists.

20 years later, the musical The Wedding Banquet has returned to Taiwan and is once again presented to us with a new story as a musical from a contemporary perspective.  It is a great honor to share this new journey with you of moving stories in this special concert.
